Abstract
Doxycycline, a broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic, is a commonly used antibiotic that exhibits bacteriostatic and antiparasitic activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of the single oral dose of doxycycline as an alternative to the standard tetracycline regimen for the treatment of human urinary tract infections (UTIs). A double-blind, randomized, parallel group study was conducted to compare the clinical efficacy of the single oral dose of doxycycline as monotherapy with the standard tetracycline regimen in the treatment of UTIs. In addition, the efficacy of the single oral dose of doxycycline was assessed in the treatment of the following five infections: acute pyelonephritis, acute urinary tract infection (AUTI), chronic urinary tract infection (CUTI), acute pyelonephritis, and chronic pyelonephritis. Doxycycline was administered once daily for the first three days and the other three days, followed by a two-day course of metronidazole and doxycycline monotherapy. The average duration of treatment was 4 weeks for the single oral dose of doxycycline as monotherapy and 7.5 weeks for the two-day course of metronidazole and doxycycline monotherapy. The eradication rate was 90.7% (90/155). No adverse events were recorded in the treated patients. In conclusion, doxycycline is an effective alternative to the standard tetracycline regimen for the treatment of UTIs.
